SUNRISE AND SUNSET OVER THE DUNES
The changing light is the single reason many travellers come to Erg Chebbi, and both ends of the day are worth planning around. Low sun rakes across the dunes, throws long shadows off every ridge, and turns the sand from pale gold to deep orange. The two hours around sunrise and sunset are when the erg looks least like a photograph and most like itself.
SUNSET
Sunset is the easier of the two to reach, as it needs no early start. Most visitors climb a high dune on foot in the late afternoon or ride out by camel to a chosen vantage point. The colour builds slowly and then fades quickly once the sun drops below the horizon. From the top of a tall dune the whole erg is visible, with the flat hamada plain stretching west towards the Anti-Atlas.
SUNRISE
Sunrise is quieter and, for many, the better of the two. It calls for a start before first light, either from an overnight camp or from the village. The air is cold and still, and the dunes are empty. As the sun clears the eastern ridge the shadows shorten fast, and the whole erg lights up within minutes.
WHERE TO WATCH
The tallest dunes near the centre of the erg give the widest view but take effort to climb, as sand gives way underfoot. A lower ridge closer to the edge is easier and still rewarding. Guides know which faces catch the best light at each season.
PRACTICAL NOTES
Climbing dunes is harder than it looks; allow more time than the distance suggests. Wear closed shoes or go barefoot on cool sand. Bring water even for a short climb, and a warm layer for the sunrise cold. → Sunset pairs naturally with an overnight camp; sunrise with a camp departure or an early camel trek.

How do I pay for my tour?
Booking is simple. We require a small deposit to secure your reservation, which can be paid via PayPal, Wise, or bank transfer. The remaining balance is paid directly to your driver-guide in cash on the first day of your tour. We accept Euros (€), US Dollars ($), and Moroccan Dirhams (MAD).
Can I cancel my booking?
Yes. Our cancellation terms are clearly explained on our Cancellation Policy page. We recommend reviewing the policy before confirming your reservation.

The Merzouga Sahara Desert is approximately 560 km (348 miles) from Marrakesh. Because of the distance, our tours include scenic overnight stops, allowing you to enjoy the journey rather than spending an entire day driving.
How far is the Sahara Desert from Fes?
The drive from Fes to Merzouga covers approximately 500 km (310 miles).
How far is Casablanca from Merzouga?
Casablanca is about 660 km (410 miles) from the Sahara Desert. We usually recommend a 5-day (or longer) itinerary to enjoy the journey comfortably.
