SANDBOARDING ON ERG CHEBBI
Sandboarding is the simplest of the dune activities and one of the most enjoyable. A board, a tall dune and a willingness to climb are all it takes. The steep leeward faces of Erg Chebbi give long, clean runs, and there is no lift — every descent is earned by the walk back up.
HOW IT WORKS
The board is similar to a snowboard, waxed on the underside to slide on dry sand. Beginners ride sitting or lying down; those with balance can try standing, strapped in like a snowboarder. A guide waxes the board, points out a safe run, and shows the basic stance. The soft sand makes falls painless, which is why the activity suits all ages.
WHERE AND WHEN
The best faces are the tall, steep dunes near the centre of the erg, where the slope is long enough for a proper run. Early morning and late afternoon are the times to go, both for the light and to avoid the midday heat of the sand, which grows too hot to sit on. The sand needs to be dry, so the activity pauses after the rare desert rain.
THE CLIMB
The catch is the climb: each descent means walking back up soft sand, which is hard work. This keeps runs to a handful rather than a whole day, and makes sandboarding a good pairing with a sunset dune walk rather than a standalone half day.
WHAT TO BRING
Closed shoes for the climb, sun protection, and clothing you don’t mind filling with sand. Boards and wax are provided by the operator.
PRACTICAL NOTES
No experience is needed and no minimum age applies for seated riding. → Often included as part of an overnight camp stay or a sunset dune session rather than booked alone.
