KHAMLIA AND GNAWA MUSIC
A short distance south of Merzouga sits the village of Khamlia, a small settlement whose people are descended from sub-Saharan communities brought north across the Sahara generations ago. Khamlia is known across the region for its Gnawa music, and a visit to hear it played is one of the most rewarding non-dune activities near Erg Chebbi.
WHO THE GNAWA ARE
The Gnawa carry a musical and spiritual tradition rooted in West Africa and shaped over centuries in Morocco. Their music blends deep bass rhythms with call-and-response singing and the metallic clash of iron castanets. In Khamlia the tradition is kept alive by village groups who perform for visitors in a simple hall, often over glasses of mint tea.
WHAT A VISIT INVOLVES
Sessions are informal. A group of musicians plays the guembri, a three-stringed bass lute, alongside qraqeb — heavy iron castanets — and hand drums. The rhythm is hypnotic and builds through each piece. Visitors sit close, and there is usually a chance to ask about the instruments and the history afterwards. A small contribution or the purchase of a recording supports the players directly.
WHY IT MATTERS
Khamlia offers context that the dunes alone cannot. The village’s story — of migration, settlement and a culture preserved at the desert’s edge — adds depth to a trip that might otherwise pass only through landscape. It is also one of the few activities in the area suited to the heat of midday, being indoors and shaded.
PRACTICAL NOTES
Khamlia is a few minutes by road or a longer ride by quad or 4×4 from Merzouga. Sessions are short, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Dress modestly as in any village. → Easily combined with a quad or 4×4 circuit that also takes in the M’Fis mines.

Booking is simple. We require a small deposit to secure your reservation, which can be paid via PayPal, Wise, or bank transfer. The remaining balance is paid directly to your driver-guide in cash on the first day of your tour. We accept Euros (€), US Dollars ($), and Moroccan Dirhams (MAD).
Can I cancel my booking?

The Merzouga Sahara Desert is approximately 560 km (348 miles) from Marrakesh. Because of the distance, our tours include scenic overnight stops, allowing you to enjoy the journey rather than spending an entire day driving.

The drive from Fes to Merzouga covers approximately 500 km (310 miles).
How far is Casablanca from Merzouga?
Casablanca is about 660 km (410 miles) from the Sahara Desert. We usually recommend a 5-day (or longer) itinerary to enjoy the journey comfortably.
