Here’s the plan. Feel free to customise it to match your interests.
Day 1: Fes -> Ifrane -> Middle Atlas Mountains -> Ziz Valley -> Merzouga
Departure from Fes around 08:00, travelling towards Merzouga. Your first destination is Morocco’s “little Switzerland,” Ifrane. After a cup of coffee here, you’ll have a chance to watch the Barbary macaques in the cedar forest of Azrou. From here we drive over the Middle Atlas Mountains to Midelt (also called the apple capital of Morocco), where you can have lunch.
We continue over the Tizi n’Talghemt pass (the “she-camel pass”) and along the Ziz Valley — an oasis of palm trees and small traditional villages — with many stops along the way.
We reach Merzouga in the afternoon, where your camels and guide are ready to lead you across the Erg Chebbi dunes to your desert camp. Watch an orange sunset from a high dune. After a delicious dinner, the camp staff light the fire so you can sit around a campfire enjoying Berber music beneath a starlit sky.
Day 2: Merzouga -> Rissani -> Fes
We highly recommend waking early to catch a spectacular sunrise. After a tasty breakfast at your camp, we leave for Rissani (the cradle of Morocco’s current ruling family), where you can discover a traditional Moroccan market if it’s a market day (Tuesday, Thursday, or Sunday). Then we travel back to Fes via Erfoud and along the Ziz Valley once more. Your Fes desert trip 2 days ends with drop-off at your accommodation in Fes.
